Residency Comes To Life

Over the last 12 months Bev, Bini and Barbara have been the LBT’s visual artists in residence in the Balcony, behind the large arched window.
This exhibition is a celebration of their work, and you can follow the process as the Upper Bar gives insight into the development phase with the Lower Bar and Foyer showcasing the completed work.

We are who we are!! This is our inheritance. The wonder of being. Makes you stop to think. I was moved by the image of the beautiful hidden world inside the body. I work with wire re-creating the visual outlines, the veins, the arteries, the roots of life. My work focuses on my perception of the natural world. The concept of space and how it is shared, not just by humans. An examination of existence and identity. Family characteristics, human nature, the passage of time and the memories left behind. These are my inspirations.

My time at the Lawrence Batley Theatre has been a fantastic experience which has allowed me to work in an exciting and inspirational environment. I have used the building and productions to inspire my work. I have produced a series of stitched pieces using a base of brown paper which I have coloured with paints and threads. The patterns in the pieces are all to be found within the Theatre.

It’s been a great year as Artist in Residence at the LBT. My work during the year has captured the performances, audiences and patterns that have shared the LBT space. The work has been created using discarded and found paper products, brochures, leaflets, photographs and flyers that help to promote the LBT events. I give them another lease of life by shredding, re –assembling, painting, waxing, sanding, bleaching, stitching and generally manipulating the surface before reconstructing it. I have concentrated on seating arrangements or patterns in the main auditorium and mapping staff, audience movement throughout the theatre spaces alongside my interpretation of performances. There are some re appearing patterns within the work and these are taken directly from the theatre architecture and fixtures.
To complement the diverse work of our resident artists we are showcasing…

I’m studying Textile Crafts at The University of Huddersfield, inspiring and developing my jewellery making. After a crochet workshop I decided that I could use the techniques that I had learned (and those I already had) to create bracelets. I soon decided to try other materials and techniques, including using recycled materials such as zips and leather. I also use mixtures of textures and techniques such as weaving and crocheting in wire and yarn for my latest collection of pieces, which won me a competition organised by Rowan Yarn. I am currently on my placement year working with a range of textile based jewellery designer makers to further my knowledge and skill.
